What is Animal Chiropractic?
Animal Chiropractors diagnose and treat lack of motion in joints. This lack of motion can lead to secondary problems with nerves, muscles, blood flow and even organ dysfunction. We refer to this lack of motion and its’ secondary problems as vertebral subluxation complexes. All diagnosis and treatment of joint dysfunction is done within a joints normal range of motion. Once a joint is found to have decreased motion, a very specific, high velocity, low amplitude thrust is made. This thrust restores joint motion and allows the body’s own innate powers to begin to heal itself.
Who is qualified to adjust an animal?
Certified Animal Chiropractors must be either licensed veterinarians or licensed human chiropractors. Certification courses include at least 210 hours of in class and lab instruction as well as homework. These classes include anatomy, physiology, neurology, diseases, proper chiropractic adjustment technique and chiropractic theory. Certified Animal Chiropractors must pass tests that include exams for each module and a written and practical final exam. Certification through the IVCA (International Veterinary Chiropractic Association) is optional. Those that become IVCA certified must pass a rigorous three part exam that includes a written portion and two practical exams. To become an IVCA member, one must agree to a certain code of conduct and standard of proficiency and complete the required hours of continuing education
My chiropractic story.
As a 1995 graduate of Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine, my roots and my beliefs in western medicine have been firmly rooted for many years. If you’d asked me at that time what I thought of animal chiropractic, I would have told you that there is no way a human can adjust a large animal and make a difference. That all changed a few years ago when I was having difficulty treating a problem in my own horse. She had ultrasounds, injections and shock wave among other things to treat a lump she was getting in her spine every time I rode her. I even tried multiple saddles and correction pads to no avail. Since we weren’t getting anywhere with tradional medicine, my equine veterinarian suggested we try chiropractic. To my surprise, it worked!!!! The lump went away for several months and upon its’ return, chiropractic once again resolved the issue.
Most recently, I purchased a young horse with multiple issues. Through sheer determination, multiple medical procedures and a bit of luck, I believe we are finally headed in the right direction.
That being said, and even as a small animal veterinarian, I was extremely frustrated by the difficulty I had in getting a diagnosis for my horse. I felt like if I had known more, maybe we could have figured out what was wrong sooner. I began to think about what I could do to help my horses and other people that may be in the situation I was in. That is what prompted my decision to attend animal chiropractic school. Since attending school, I now have a better understanding of how and why chiropractic works in animals and how a person can adjust a large animal.
As a former Young Rider, National Champion, USDF bronze, silver and gold medalist, my goal is to use my knowledge of riding, my knowledge of horses and my chiropractic skills to help the animals we love live their best lives and be the best athlete’s possible. My goal is also to help bridge the gap between the patient and the large animal veterinarian so as a team, we can help you as the owner provide the best care possible for your horse.
